Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo NAS – Web Access

I have been using my Buffalo NAS Box mainly as a network fileserver and a repository for backups so far. I tried the Web Access feature today, and it works quite nicely.

This feature allows you to access any assigned share on your disk through a web service. For example, you can create a share called “web” and enable web access on that share. You have the option of allowing “anonymous” access or can setup usernames/passwords.

Suppose you want to share some of your pictures with your friends and family. Here is what you can do:

(1) Login to your LinkStation administration panel (from a webbrowser using its IP address). Then, under “Shared Folders”, create a new share called, say, “web.”

(2) Under “Web Access”->”Service Setup”, enable “Web Access Service.” You can optionally choose HTTPS/SSL encryption. Select “Enable” for “Use BuffaloNAS.com.” Now, you need to create a unique name for your share on the BuffaloNAS server, along with a key. In the corresponding boxes, enter a name and a key that you prefer. Let’s say that you chose “amazingweb” as the name and “12345” as the key. Choose a port number, e.g., 1000, and hit “Apply.” If the name you chose is available, then you will see a message saying that the service is setup successfully. Else, you will have to try another name.

(3) Your NAS box typically sits behind your home router. You need to make sure that the router is configured to forward traffic on your chosen application port number (e.g 1000 chosen above) to the IP address of your NAS box.

(4) Copy a few test pictures to your “web” share.

(5) In your web-browser, enter “http://www.buffalonas.com/amazingweb” or, whatever name you chose. You should see the contents of your “web” share in your browser, from where you should be able to click and open your pictures. If you had chosen to user usersnames/passwords, then you will be prompted for those. You are ready to share your pictures (and other files) from your “web” share now!!

(6) Let your friends and family know that they can point their web-browser to “http://www.buffalonas.com/amazingweb“, and, enter the username/password (if you have chosen to), to view the pictures and other files that you wish to share!

You can now use your own LinkStation as a repository to share your pictures, videos and other files, without having to upload them to online services.

Pro Duo —–> Router —–> ADSL Router

    Thank you

    Hi,

I’ve been trying to set this up for a while now. But I keen on getting an error message whenever I hit apply in (2):

‘The device name and key must be between 3 and 20 characters, and only contain letters, numbers, underscores (_) and hyphens (-). The port number must only contain numbers, and be between 2 and 5 digits.’

Well guess what? The device name, key and port *do* meet all the rules above! Very frustrating!

    Any ideas?

I ran into that problem after my LSL crashed, and I restored it by updating the firmware. Wouldn’t take my web access settings until after I reset it. Not sure why that worked but it did.
